The encaustic paintings of Shawna Moore are rich with layers of pigment and wax: a radiant and complex terrain of light, color and texture. For Moore, making art is a quest to make sense of the world, both materially, and conceptually.
Andrea Broyles joins Lyndsay McCandless Contemporary for her first show in Jackson and a book-signing of her newly published retrospective, “A Gathering”. “My work refers to abstraction in part, and I have found the more abstract it becomes, the more real it is.” -Theodore Waddell Theodore Waddell’s drawings capture and convey a certain elemental clarity and spirit; a unique aesthetic of emptiness that defines both subject and landscape. Waddell will be at the reception to converse about his dog and horse drawings and to sign his children’s book, “Tucker Gets Tuckered”. Enjoy jazz provided by the Papa Chan Trio.
LMC invites you to dive into the underwater realm with the ocean futures society and a photographic exhibit that is bringing our country’s national marine sanctuaries to the rocky mountains. Come meet explorer/filmmaker Jean-Michel Cousteau, expedition photographer Carrie Vonderhaar and co-author Julie Robinson, who will be on hand to sign books and prints and share the stories behind the beautiful images on exhibit from their book, America’s Underwater Treasures.
Painting is an illusion, a piece of magic, so what you see is not what you see. I don't know what a painting is; who knows what sets off even the desire to paint? It might be things, thoughts, a memory, sensations, which have nothing to do directly with painting itself. They can come from anything and anywhere. -Phillip Guston
"The true artist declares himself by leaving out a lot. The artist alone sees spirits. But after he has told of their appearing to him, everybody sees them." -Goethe
Kingswood and Waddell are masters of well-placed marks. They explore the connection between state of mind and state of nature. Environment and animal become abstracted and reduced to their most essential elements as these artists express their intensely personal visual vocabulary.

one may as well burst out in laughter.

Dan Burgette: Sculpting the Wind - A backcountry ranger in GTNP for over 30 years, sculptor and World Champion bird carver Dan Burgette, has the knowledgeable eye of a true bird lover. With his abstract landscapes, Jackson photographer Wes Timmerman takes us to the places that his subconscious seeks through the lens. His realization of the emotional value of the landscape allows for visions of the environment to emerge based on an emotional reaction to the texture, pattern and rhythm of nature.
